Update & spectator sports popularity

Not a hell of a lot happening in life, so, haven't posted.

The Twins have played like crap despite Joe Mauer looking like he may win a batting title this year.

The World Cup started yesterday and I had a disagreement with a guy at DeGidios over  soccer being the number one spectator sport in the world.  He claimed it's auto racing.  I said that was true in the US, but, I didn't buy it for the world.  I still don't.  I couldn't find definitive evidence, but, I did find that NASCAR generally has a maximum 20 million viewers per week.  If you give other major racing styles equal numbers (which is generous), you end up with 800 million per style for a year.  I can think of 4-5 styles, so that gives 3.8 billion viewers in a year.  Contrast that with the 2002 World Cup, which lasted 20 days and had 28.8 BILLION viewers.  I just don't see any way auto racing gets close to those numbers and that's just one big event, not a year of who knows how many major leagues one want to count in the world.

My next post will have the entry sheet for the US Open available.
